If you run a local business, your Google Business Profile is the single highest-leverage piece of digital real estate you own. It shows up before your website, before your socials, before everything. Yet most businesses treat it like a set-and-forget listing.
1. Complete Every Single Field
Google rewards completeness. Every empty field is a missed ranking signal. Business description, services, products, attributes, opening hours — fill them all. We see profiles jump 2-3 positions in the local pack just from completing fields that were left blank.
2. Post Weekly (Yes, GBP Posts Matter)
GBP posts signal to Google that your business is active. They expire after 7 days, so weekly is the minimum cadence. Share offers, events, updates, or tips. Each post is another touchpoint with potential customers browsing the local pack.
3. Respond to Every Review Within 24 Hours
Review velocity and response rate are both ranking factors. But more importantly, your responses are sales copy that every future customer reads. Thank positive reviewers by name, address negatives with empathy and a resolution. Never be defensive.
4. Add Photos Every Week
Businesses with more than 100 photos get 520% more calls than the average. Upload real photos — your team, your space, your work, happy customers (with permission). Avoid stock photos. Google can tell, and so can your customers.
5. Use the Q&A Section Before Customers Do
The Q&A section on your GBP is public and anyone can answer — including competitors. Seed it yourself with your most common customer questions and detailed answers. This controls the narrative and adds keyword-rich content to your listing.
None of these are complicated. The edge comes from doing them consistently while your competitors do nothing. That is the game in local SEO.
