I reckon most gym owners spend hours agonising over their website copy, their Instagram grid, maybe even their Google Ads — and then spend about four seconds picking their GBP categories.

That's a problem, because your primary category is arguably the single most important field on your entire Google Business Profile. It's the field Google uses to decide which searches to show your business for. Get it wrong, and you're basically invisible for the exact searches your ideal members are typing in.

The good news? It takes about five minutes to fix, and the impact can be massive. I've seen gyms jump from page two to the Map Pack just by switching from a generic category to the right specific one.

How GBP Categories Affect Your Rankings

Here's how it works in plain English.

Your Primary Category = Your Identity

When someone searches "boxing gym near me," Google looks at every business in the area and asks one question first: what's their primary category?

If your primary category is "Boxing Gym," you're in the running. If your primary category is "Gym" or "Fitness Center," you're already behind every competitor who picked "Boxing Gym" — even if your entire business is boxing.

Additional Categories = Extra Reach

You can add up to 9 additional categories on top of your primary. These tell Google about the other services you offer. They carry less weight than your primary, but they do expand the range of searches you can appear in.

For example, a boxing gym with "Personal Trainer" as an additional category might show up for "personal trainer near me" searches too.

Specific Beats General — Every Time

This is the golden rule. If Google offers a category that precisely describes your business, use it. A "Boxing Gym" will outrank a "Gym" for boxing-related searches every single time, all else being equal.

How to Check Your Competitors' Categories

Before you pick your categories, it's worth seeing what the top-ranking gyms in your area are using.

Method 1: GMBspy Chrome Extension (Recommended)

  1. Install the GMBspy Chrome extension — it's free.
  2. Search for a competitor on Google Maps.
  3. Click on their listing.
  4. GMBspy will display their primary and additional categories right there on the page.

Takes about 30 seconds per competitor. Check the top 3-5 gyms ranking for your main search terms.

Method 2: Manual Method

  1. Search for your competitor on Google Maps.
  2. Look at the category shown directly under their business name — that's their primary category.
  3. You won't see their additional categories this way, which is why the extension is better.

Best Categories by Gym Type

Find your gym type below, set your primary category, then add the additional categories that actually apply to your business.

Important: Only add additional categories for services you genuinely offer.

Boxing Gyms

  • Primary: Boxing Gym

  • Additional: Boxing Gym, Sports Club, Fitness Center, Self Defence School

Why this works: "Martial Arts School" is the umbrella category that covers BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai, Karate, Taekwondo. "Self Defence School" is worth adding if you market self-defence classes specifically.

Note for BJJ specifically: There's no "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" category in Google's system (as of 2026). "Martial Arts School" is your best bet. Make sure your business description and keyword strategy cover the BJJ-specific terms instead.

CrossFit Boxes

  • Primary: CrossFit Box
  • Additional: Gym, Fitness Center, Personal Trainer

Why this works: "CrossFit Box" is a specific category Google offers, and it's perfect for affiliated boxes. Add "Personal Trainer" if you offer individual programming.

If you're not CrossFit affiliated but run similar functional fitness, your primary should be "Gym" or "Fitness Center" instead. Don't use "CrossFit Box" if you're not actually a CrossFit affiliate.

Commercial / Boutique Gyms

  • Primary: Gym or Fitness Center
  • Additional: Personal Trainer, Weight Training, Health Club, Exercise Equipment Store (only if you sell equipment)

Why this works: "Gym" tends to attract people looking for traditional weights-and-cardio. "Fitness Center" leans towards a broader facility with classes, pools, saunas. Pick whichever better describes what you are.

  • Additional: Fitness Center, Meditation Center, Pilates Studio (only if you offer Pilates), Health Club

Why this works: "Yoga Studio" is specific and exactly what people search for. Don't add "Pilates Studio" unless you actually run Pilates classes.

Pilates Studios

  • Primary: Pilates Studio
  • Additional: Fitness Center, Yoga Studio (only if you offer yoga), Personal Trainer, Health Club

Why this works: "Personal Trainer" works well here if you offer one-on-one reformer sessions.

How to Change Your Categories

If you've realised your categories are wrong, here's how to fix them. Takes about two minutes.

  1. Sign in to your Google Business Profile.
  2. Select your business if you manage more than one.
  3. Click Edit profile (or the pencil icon next to your business info).
  4. Find the Business category section.
  5. Click on your current primary category to change it. Start typing and Google will show you matching options.
  6. Click + Add another category to add additional categories.
  7. To remove an additional category, click the X next to it.
  8. Hit Save.

Changes can take a few days to a couple of weeks to fully reflect in search results. Don't panic if you don't see immediate movement.

Categories to Avoid

Don't add categories for services you don't offer. Adding "Swimming Pool" because you reckon it might get you more traffic will backfire. Google cross-references your categories with your website, reviews, and other signals.

Don't use broad when specific exists. If you're a boxing gym, don't use "Gym" as your primary when "Boxing Gym" is right there.

Don't add "Sport" or "Recreation" categories. Things like "Sports Complex" or "Recreation Center" are too vague and attract the wrong searches.

Don't duplicate intent. "Gym" and "Fitness Center" are similar enough that having both as additional categories is fine, but don't add five variations of the same thing.

Common Mistakes

Using "Gym" as primary when a specific category exists. Boxing gyms using "Gym," yoga studios using "Fitness Center." Always go specific first.

Adding every category you can find. Every irrelevant category dilutes your relevance signal.

Never checking what competitors are using. If every top-ranking boxing gym in your area is using "Boxing Gym" as their primary and you're using "Sports Club," that's your answer right there.
